Prefetching

As shown in File Compression, Graphics Plugin predicts what those frames and fields the NLE system will ask for next and requests them from the renderer in advance (prefetching). Although it's possible to disable this feature, this would require safe mode, which is only used if there are problems with prefetching.

What Level Should You Use?

When fine-tuning the performance, the question is how aggressive the pre-fetching should be. Current releases use more aggressive prefetching than earlier, so it's essential to configure how many fields to prefetch, i.e. the number of graphics requests on the network from one client at any given moment. You can also pre-fetch the whole clip, which would likely provide adequate performance; however, this blocks the Viz Engine for other users who want to edit their effects, scrub the timeline or render. In general, the default setting of prefetching 20 fields is a good compromise, although your setup might require a different value (between 5 and 30 are acceptable values).

Note: If rendering performance is too slow when prefetching is enabled, you can try to disable multithread rendering. See the Adobe/Avid/Edius Settings section of the Configuration Tool for more information.
